I’ve been thinking about the release schedule for this year a lot today, and how I think it compares with the last five years. Going into this year, I was still of the mindset that 2011 may be the best year in modern gaming. The fall alone had an incredible set of games – Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Assassins’ Creed: Revelation, Halo: CE Anniversary, Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim all came out within two months of each other. That’s a tough act to follow – and 2012 gave it a good go.
Once we got to 2013, things slowed down a little bit on the games front. That’s because we got the latest batch of consoles in 2013 – so the software wasn’t quite as prolific. Then last year we finally got a good bunch to really make the new consoles worth it. Games like Titanfall, Thief, Destiny, Advanced Warfare, Halo: Master Chief Collection, Guacamelee, Volgarr, Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age: Inquisition all gave the new consoles a fantastic base.
But this year really could end up being even stronger. We’ve just hit March and already had a two big games – Evolve and Dying Light, plus a couple re-issues. In March we also have two more big releases – Battlefield: Hardline and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. I would also really expect to see new Advanced Warfare DLC soon, as well as Destiny DLC. April brings us Mortal Kombat X, which means we have five huge titles before we even reach the halfway mark. May is a bit of a breather, at least for now, but June gives us what could be the early contender for Game of the Year – Batman: Arkham Knight. July is E3, which I think could be an even stronger show than last year. And as of right now, the fall is already shaping up strong – Call of Duty, Halo 5, Assassins’ Creed, Metal Gear Solid V, Battlefront, not to mention a couple games with Tom Clancy’s name that don’t have solid dates yet.
All that said, I really think that if each of these games hits on even a fair amount of their points, this year could finally top 2011. Add in a bunch of DLC that I’m sure will be coming out as well, and this is definitely a really full year. I hope you’ve been saving up.
